Self-Care
Looking after yourself
26 September 2026
Most of us were never taught this. We learned to change a tire, fix a leaky faucet, maybe throw a decent spiral. But nobody ever sat us down and said: here is how you wash your face properly, here is what that dry patch on your forehead actually means, and here is why you have been using the same bar of soap on everything for twenty years and wondering why your skin looks tired.
This is not vanity. Taking care of your skin, your hair, and your body is the same kind of basic maintenance you would give anything else you expect to last. A truck that never gets an oil change runs fine for a while and then it does not. Your body is not so different.
Start with your face
The simplest routine that actually works has three steps, and it takes less time than brushing your teeth.
- Wash. A gentle face wash, morning and night. Not the same soap you use on your hands. Your face has thinner skin and it needs something that cleans without stripping all the moisture out. Look for the words "gentle" or "for sensitive skin" on the bottle. If your skin feels tight after washing, the product is too harsh.
- Moisturize. After washing, while your face is still slightly damp, put on a simple moisturizer. This is not optional, even if your skin feels oily. Oily skin that is dehydrated produces more oil to compensate. A basic, fragrance-free moisturizer is enough.
- Sunscreen. Every morning, rain or shine. Ultraviolet light is the single biggest factor in how your skin ages. A moisturizer with SPF 30 counts. It takes ten seconds. Ten seconds a day for decades of difference.
That is the whole routine. Three products, two minutes. Everything else is extra.
A short film worth watching
If you have never thought about any of this before, this beginner's guide to skincare for men is a good place to start. It covers the basics plainly and without trying to sell you a cabinet full of products.

Beyond the face
Grooming is more than skincare, and most of it is just consistency.
- Nails. Trim them once a week. Clean under them. It takes two minutes and people notice more than you think.
- Hair. Find a barber you trust and go regularly, not just when things get out of hand. A regular cut every four to six weeks keeps you looking put-together without effort.
- Teeth. Floss. Seriously. Brush twice a day, floss once, and see a dentist twice a year. Your teeth are the one part of your body you show every time you speak.
- Body. Use a proper body wash instead of that all-in-one bar. Moisturize your hands and elbows in winter. Wear deodorant, not just cologne.
The quiet part
Self-care is not just the visible stuff. It is also the things nobody sees. Getting enough sleep. Drinking water instead of a fourth cup of coffee. Going for a walk when your head is loud. Calling the doctor when something has been bothering you for three weeks instead of three months.
None of this is complicated. Most of it costs almost nothing. The hard part is deciding that you are worth the effort, and then doing the small thing today instead of the big thing never.
